Court Jurisdiction

Welcome to the Winneconne Joint Municipal Court webpage.   We have created this page to provide you with information you may need regarding municipal court processes.

The Winneconne Joint Municipal Court handles juvenile, traffic and ordinance violations in the Village of Winneconne.   In addition, the court processes ordinance violations for the following municipalities: Town of Winneconne, Town of Vinland, Town of Clayton, Town of Neenah, Town of Winchester and the Town of Hortonia.   The court also handles traffic violations for Town of Clayton and Town of Winneconne.

The municipal court is an independent branch of local government whose fundamental purpose is to ensure timely, efficient delivery and administration of justice.   Our cases are not shown on the Wisconsin CCAP program.   Municipal courts handle only non-criminal matters, so jail time is never ordered as part of a sentence following a guilty finding. Jail time can be ordered, however, in the event that a defendant fails to pay a previously ordered forfeiture. 

The judge and the court clerk are not allowed to give legal advice.   If you desire an attorney, you must retain one at your own expense.   An attorney can explain your rights and assist you.   We urge you to retain your own attorney if you wish.   The information on our website does not constitute legal advice.

Open Session

All municipal court sessions are open to the public, with the exception of cases involving juveniles. If you are interested in observing your court in session, you are welcome to sit in and observe at any time. Court generally is in session one Wednesday per month for initial appearances, and one Wednesday per month for trials. You may contact the court clerk to learn the next court dates. Municipal court sessions are held in the Village of Winneconne Municipal Center.

Court Etiquette

It is important that you come to court prepared and follow proper court etiquette once you arrive. Plan to arrive a few minutes early. If you are under 18 years of age, you must bring a parent or legal guardian to court with you.
