Mailboxes, Garbage Cans, and Snow Removal

Winter weather brings snowplows, and snowplows can sometimes result in damage to mailboxes. This situation arises from the need to balance two essential services: ensuring safe, passable roadways and maintaining reliable mail delivery for residents.

Mailboxes and Snow Removal

The Village of Winneconne allows residents to place mailboxes within the public right-of-way as a courtesy. However, the Village’s primary responsibility is to keep roadways clear and safe for all traffic, including emergency vehicles and mail carriers. Public safety concerns must take precedence during snow removal operations.

Mailboxes and posts that are properly installed and in good condition generally withstand snowplowing operations. In most cases, damage is not caused by direct contact with the plow blade, but rather by the force and weight of snow and slush being pushed from the roadway, which can bend posts or dislodge mailboxes.

Responsibility and Repairs

The Village regrets any damage to mailboxes or supports that may occur during routine snow removal. Under Wisconsin law, the Village is not legally responsible for damage to personal property incurred during the performance of governmental functions.

That said, if a mailbox is directly struck by a snowplow blade, the Public Works Department will repair or replace the mailbox and/or support. Please note:

  • Repairs may not be immediate.
  • Damage must be reported within 48 hours of the incident.
  • Reports can be made by contacting the Village of Winneconne at (920) 582-4381.

Garbage Cans During Winter

Garbage and recycling carts should not be placed in the roadway. To avoid damage and ensure safe snow removal:

  • Place carts on your driveway apron, or
  • Place them in a cleared area within the public right-of-way, away from traffic lanes.

Proper placement helps protect your property and allows snowplows to operate safely and efficiently.
